The challenge
The Planet is increasingly recognized as a stakeholder in sustainable innovation. But how do we include perspectives that are not human?
I developed an ecological story-making approach to help teams explore sustainability challenges through the perspectives of more-than-human stakeholders.
My role
Method developer · Researcher · Facilitator · Campaign coordinator
The approach
During Philips Sustainability Day, 50 innovation and business stakeholders took part in workshops where they created stories around human and non-human characters, exploring environmental consequences and relationships between actors.
The outcome
72% of participants reported increased awareness of the environmental consequences of their decisions, motivating them to prioritize sustainability in their roles.
The workshop was part of a global Philips campaign that helped create a shared sense of purpose around circular healthcare innovation.

What participants say
“Thinking and feeling from the planet's perspective as a tool in decision making is a huge AHA moment! I will prompt the question ‘what would the planet think about that?’ in future business cases.”
“We felt really bad for Daisy the wind turbine. It was a new experience for me. I get often irritated when the word empathy is used — what does it really mean? This was empathy beyond the buzzword.”
